49 different languages are spoken in Greater Afghanistan

Dear Sir or Madam,

When we examine the linguistic situation of different countries, we find that many states are home to several languages, while nevertheless having a common national or official language.

For example, various languages are spoken in Saudi Arabia, but Arabic is the official state language. Iran is also linguistically diverse, while Persian is the official state language. In Germany, different languages are spoken as well, but German serves as the common national language. The United States of America is home to numerous languages, while English functions as the common language. China also has considerable linguistic diversity, while Standard Chinese serves as the common national language.

In Greater Afghanistan, 49 different languages are spoken. This linguistic diversity is part of our cultural and social reality. Nevertheless, it is not possible to designate all 49 languages as national languages. Likewise, it would not be practical to establish three different languages simultaneously as common national languages. For communication across regions and for the unity of the state, a single common national language is therefore necessary.

We respect the different ethnic groups and tribes of Greater Afghanistan and, naturally, their respective mother tongues. Everyone should have the freedom to use their mother tongue with their family, friends, and other people who speak the same language. We have no prejudice against any language or ethnic group.

At the same time, we emphasize that Afghanistan needs one common national language. A multitude of languages can reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of a country; however, a common language is of great importance for communication across regions and for the unity of the state.

Language is, above all, a means of communication. When people cannot understand one another because of linguistic differences, misunderstandings, prejudices, and social conflicts can arise. A common language can therefore help facilitate communication between different population groups and strengthen a sense of belonging and solidarity.

Regardless of whether they are Tajiks, Baloch, Uzbeks, Hazaras, Pashtuns, or members of other ethnic groups of Greater Afghanistan, we are all one Afghan people and share a common homeland. A common language can serve as a unifying element and strengthen our unity.

Pashto is the common national language of our Greater Afghanistan. It should certainly not be considered shameful if, for example, an Uzbek, Tajik, Hazara, or member of another ethnic group speaks Pashto.

Our goal is not to eliminate linguistic diversity, but rather to establish a common linguistic foundation through one national language—Pashto—that connects all population groups with one another.

Yours sincerely,
