Petition to the United Nations: Appeal Against the Deportation of Afghan Refugees to Afghanistan
Dear Sir or Madam,
We hereby address an urgent appeal to the United Nations, the international community, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the European Union.
We have learned from media reports that the Federal Republic of Germany intends to deport 488 Afghan refugees to Afghanistan, including both individuals with criminal convictions and individuals without previous convictions.
The ongoing conflicts, as well as the continuing difficult and threatening security situation in Afghanistan, are internationally known. The Afghan civilian population bears no responsibility for the decades of conflict in Afghanistan, which have been shaped to a significant extent by the actions of external actors and the geopolitical interests of various states.
We are concerned that, in connection with individual incidents, Afghan refugees are increasingly being collectively condemned in parts of the media and political debate and portrayed as scapegoats for broader social problems. While individual persons may commit crimes, this must not lead to an entire population group or all Afghan refugees being placed under general suspicion.
By comparison, around one million people from Ukraine live in Germany. Nevertheless, there is virtually no public discussion in the media or among politicians about the possible deportation of Ukrainian refugees. We therefore call for Afghan refugees to be treated fairly and equally, in accordance with the treatment afforded to Ukrainian refugees.
We appeal to the international community, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the European Union to refrain from deporting Afghan refugees to Afghanistan.
Likewise, we oppose the transfer of Afghan refugees to a third Likewise, we urge the authorities to refrain from transferring Afghan refugees to third countries outside the European Union, as such transfers may put their safety and fundamental rights at risk. People who have currently found protection in European countries should be given the opportunity to remain there, as a safe and dignified return to Afghanistan cannot currently be guaranteed.
We call upon the United Nations and the international community to take the continuing difficult situation and conflict conditions in Afghanistan into careful consideration and to advocate for the protection of Afghan refugees.
Yours faithfully,
P.S. We appeal to all competent airport authorities in Afghanistan not to grant landing permission to aircraft arriving from abroad carrying deported Afghan refugees on board.
